Project Description

Safety and traffic flow improvements to the intersection of Lewis Center/Worthington Road and Lewis Center/Rome Corners Road.

Project Location and Limits:
Extending approximately 1/4 mile in each direction of the intersections.

Public Input / Meeting

Delaware County is revisiting a project that was studied in 2013-2015.  At that time, Delaware County developed a conceptual plan for a single-lane modern roundabout located at the intersection of Worthington and Rome Corners Road.

2015 Conceptual Roundabout Plan

As a result of a public meeting held in September 2015 and the comments and feedback received from that meeting, this office decided to delay the design of our plans and revisit the project at a later date.

As of late 2019, growth and traffic had continued to increase within this area and despite new traffic signs installed in an effort to improve the safety of the intersection, crashes continued and planning for an improvement again became necessary.  A safety study completed in 2020 by Delaware County revealed that if growth in the area continues as expected, a level of service of F is expected by the year 2033 if nothing is improved.  Level of service is how traffic flow is graded on roads and is based on the average amount of delay a motorist experiences at the intersection.  In addition, crashes could be expected to continue or worsen as traffic increases.

As part of the 2020 safety study, a new “peanut-shaped” modern roundabout concept was developed to minimize property impacts while preserving the same benefits of a normal circular roundabout by increasing traffic flow and reducing crashes.  As a result of this study, Delaware County is  partnering with ODOT to undertake a new plan to implement these improvements in the coming years.
