PROJECT INFORMATION

DEL-CR30 Sunbury Road Bridge over Big Walnut Creek (Village of Galena)

***01-14-2011: Project Alternatives***

The Delaware County Engineer's Office has developed several alternatives for this project including rehabilitation and replacement of the bridge and we would like your feedback on these alternatives.  Please contact Rob Riley, Project Manager at 740-833-2400 or send your questions or comments to delcoeng@co.delaware.oh.us.  No decision on the preferred alternative has been made yet!

Major Rehabilitation:

Several rehabilitation alternatives were considered, including removing and replacing the bridge beams and deck (similar to what was done on the South Old 3C over Hoover Reservoir in summer 2010). None of these alternatives were feasible due to the existing foundations not being able to provide enough support for the additional width needed on the bridge.  In addition, the amount of widening that could be done on the existing substructure isn't enough for the safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians.  Rehabilitation has been dismissed as not being feasible.

Replacement:

Two alternatives were developed for replacement of the bridge.  These include a steel beam option and a prestressed concrete beam option.  Both would be in a two-span configuration versus the existing 3-spans. The pier would be located on the east bank of Big Walnut Creek instead of being in the water.  A preferred option for the deck layout and railing has not been selected yet.

Railing Alternatives

Six railing options are being considered.  All railings will include curbs that channel drainage to the ends of the bridge, rather than directly over the side or through the curbs like the current bridge.

Bridge lighting is also being considered.  The standard Village of Galena light fixture is shown in the options, though no decision has been made yet on lighting.

  Railing Option B

  Railing Option C

  Railing Option D

  Railing Option E

  Railing Option F

Bridge Deck Layout Alternatives

Various configurations for the bridge deck are being considered, including a raised sidewalk/bikepath or a flat deck with additional shoulder width.

  Option 3A-1 (steel beam)

  Option 3A-2 (prestressed concrete)

  Option 4A-1 (steel beam)

  Option 4A-2 (prestressed concrete)

Railing Option A (form lined brick pattern on parapet with twin-steel tube railing)

Project Objectives:
Purpose: Improve the existing bridge over Sunbury Road to provide for and enhance the safety and mobility of area motorists, bicyclists and pedestrian users.

Need:  The existing bridge is structurally deficient due to normal deterioration over its 50+ year life, and is functionally obsolete based on its narrow width and inadequate railing.  It does not serve the safety and mobility needs of pedestrians and bicyclists and is approaching a condition that will no longer adequately serve vehicular traffic without major repairs.

Project Location:

The project site is located on the east side of downtown Galena, Ohio.

Project Background:

The existing 200-foot continuous steel beam bridge was built in 1953 as part of the City of Columbus's Hoover Dam project.  The bridge is in fair structural condition with notable deterioration of the steel beam superstructure and concrete deck.  Rehabilitation or replacement of this bridge has been identified as a high priority project to ensure that adequate transportation is maintained in this area.

Road Closure Information:
Traffic will be detoured during construction.  Construction is expected to last up to 6 months, depending on the alternative that is selected.

Project Schedule:

The project is currently in preliminary engineering stage.  Development of alternatives is underway.  Evaluation of alternatives will happen in winter 2010-11 and final design will commence in summer 2011.  Construction is scheduled to begin in 2013.

Engineering Information:
EMH&T, Inc. of Columbus, Ohio has been retained by Delaware County to provide environmental investigations and design engineering for this project.
