PROJECT INFORMATION
Smothers & Harlem Road
Intersection Improvements (Delaware & Franklin Counties) The Franklin and Delaware County Engineer's Offices will be hosting an informational meeting to discuss the proposed improvement of the Harlem Road and Smothers Road intersection from 4:30 to 6:30 at the Faith Christian Center, 5325 Smothers Road (adjacent to the intersection). Please contact us with any questions or comments.
Project Location: The project site is located at the intersection of Smothers Road and Harlem Road, about 3 miles east of Westerville, Ohio.
Project Background: The existing intersection has a history of accidents and congestion. From 2004 to 2007, the accident rate was 448% of the statewide average for similar intersections. Delays are common in the morning and afternoon peak hours, particularly on the eastbound approach to the intersection.
Proposed Improvements: A single lane modern roundabout is being proposed for this intersection. The work limits are estimated to be about 200 feet in each direction of the intersection.
Road Closure Information:
Project Schedule: Detailed design of the project will be completed in late 2011. Any additional needed right of way will be purchased in 2012. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring of 2013.
Estimated Project Cost: The current project budget is $1 million. Both Delaware and Franklin Counties will be contributing to the project, and each county will seek additional funding through the Ohio Public Works Commission.
