DESIGN DEPARTMENT

Projects for which the department is currently accepting Letters of Interest can be found on the Consultant Info page.  Firms that wish to submit a statement of qualifications should also visit this page for more information about the process of prequalification.

Roadside Safety Reminders:

Each year, over 13,000 Americans die in roadside crashes.  Collisions with fixed obstructions such as trees, utility poles and steep ditches cause the greatest number of deaths.

Delaware County residents can help to make county roadways safer by remembering a few things about your front yard.  Planting trees inside the right-of-way is not allowed.  While trees serve to beautify the landscape, they are killers in roadside crashes.  Small trees grow quickly and soon become obstructions that can injure or kill when struck by a vehicle.  If you wish to plant trees along your property frontage, make sure the trees are outside the road right-of-way to ensure that adequate vehicular clear zone is maintained.

Mailboxes are one of the most the most common fixed obstructions in the right-of-way.  Mail boxes and supports that are purchased in stores generally conform to U.S. Post Office regulations for size and strength.  Custom made mail boxes must conform to the same size and strength limitations.  Generally, posts must be no larger than a 4"x4" wood post or a 2" diameter steel pipe (hollow).  Concrete, brick or stone pillars or columns are not acceptable on county or township roads, and present a serious hazard to motorists.  For more information on U.S. Post Office mailbox guidelines, click here.

Capital Improvement Program:

Each year, the Design Department assists the County Engineer in updating the plan for improvements to the capital assets under the County's jurisdiction, including roads, bridges, culverts, guardrail, storm sewers, traffic signals and traffic signs.  All of these items serve the general public by allowing the safe and efficient transportation of people and distribution of goods and services that increase everyone's quality of life.

The Delaware County Capital Improvements Program serves to maintain and upgrade the road network in Delaware County, ensuring the safety and welfare of motorists in the county.
