The Delaware County Medical Tactical Unit

As a selected member of the Delaware County Medical Tactical Unit, it is the responsibility of the Tactical Paramedic to be physically and mentally prepared at all times and to respond to perilous emergencies in times of need while maintaining the highest professional standards.  The tactical paramedic is an essential team member and requires the ability to adapt to rapidly escalating high-risk situations, provide injured personnel with rapid on-scene medical treatment, provide support during movement to target locations, identify the need for conducting medical and health risk analysis, gathering vital information during emergency situation call-outs and compiling information to a Medical Threat Assessment.  

The tactical paramedic is able to communicate to the team leaders and command staff recommendations for needed uniform and gear modifications, coordinate with command personnel on timeliness of recommended rehabilitation for team members and other inner perimeter personnel, identify the possible threat of animal, plant, chemical, and insect exposure and request further medical, fire department or hazardous material personnel and equipment response to be staged at a secure location that will provide an instant response to the emergency scene if deemed necessary.  Identifying safe primary and secondary emergency evacuation routes to and from the target scene and setting up a designated landing zone for the potential use of air medical transport also falls into the responsibilities of the Tactical Paramedic.

During training evolutions, continuous hands on knowledge of several lethal, non-lethal and diversionary weapons systems ensures safe and appropriate operation and deployment of these weapons systems utilized within the team.  He or she also enhances knowledge and quickens reaction times of various team movement formations and securing identified threats.  He or she organizes classes for the law enforcement officers of the team teaching team self aid and buddy aid and how to appropriately triage injured team and civilian personnel involved in an emergency scene situation.

PARAMEDICS WANTED!

The Delaware County Medical Tactical Unit is looking for experienced Paramedics who are in excellent physical condition to become of this elite law enforcement team.  The DTU is a multi-jurisdictional tactical team brought together by a mutual aid agreement.

Title - Medical Tactical Unit Paramedic

Job Objective - To provide rapid emergency medical treatment and extraction in a combat situation or environment with unusual circumstances.

Essential Job Requirements - 

• Shall perform under the authority and direct control of the Sheriff of Delaware County

• Shall meet the same physical requirements of the Delaware Tactical Unit (see below)

• Shall be employed, full-time, as an EMT-Paramedic with Delaware County EMS.

• Shall act under the control and be approved by the DCEMS Medical Director.

• Shall maintain current EMT-P certification from the State of Ohio, in addition to ACLS and BTLS certifications.

• Shall attend training exercises and follow the same Standard Operating Guidelines of the DTU.

• Must maintain 16 hours of service per month, which may include training, call-out emergencies, or assisting in law enforcement activity approved by the Sheriff.

Functions - Tactical Paramedics will have a limited commission under the Sheriff of Delaware County and be an employee of the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.  The Sheriff maintains the executive authority to terminate employment (with the Tactical Unit only) of any Tactical Paramedic at any time.

Non-Essential Functions - Shall include operating and maintaining owned or leased vehicles by the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.

Candidates wishing to apply must - 

• Make application to the Delaware County Sheriff's Office., with the written authorization / recommendation of their Director / Chief.

• Complete a driving and criminal records check.

• Complete an interview with the Medical Director, Sheriff's Medical Advisor, Sheriff, or appointed designee of the Sheriff's DTU.

• Complete and pass the requirements of the DTU SOG's.

• Be a State of Ohio certified EMT-Paramedic and employed full-time with Delaware County EMS.

Fitness Requirements - 

80% accumulative score required to pass.  No more than one event score may drop below 80%.
